FAQ: Virus emails are being sent from our member's email addresses

Question:

Several of us in the office this morning received emails carrying viruses and appearing to be from someone at our organization.  The "From" email address is obviously forged, but we're concerned that our members may have received the same email.  We've been getting a *huge* amount of emails carrying viruses lately and many appear to be from legitimate members of ours.  Your thoughts?

Answer:

This is one of the problems with email - there's nothing that forces you to use your own email address in the "From" box, or even to use a real email address there.  What's worse, a lot of viruses have the capability to use the mail program of the computer they infect, sending from that person to whoever is in their contacts list or inbox.  The only way to combat it is to educate your membership about this.  Send them a blast email and include a page on your website indicating that they should NEVER open an attachment unless they were already expecting it, even if it is from someone they know and seems legitimate.  This is especially true for .exe, .zip, and other file extensions they are not familiar with.

(Also encourage your members to use an anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee that quarantines viruses.  Otherwise, when one of them gets a virus, a lot of you may get it too, since viruses tend to send themselves to people in the infected computer's address book.)
